What we grow & how we grow it
We have an interest in helping preserve “heritage” breeds, so over the years, we have grown several species (hogs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, goats and sheep). These breeds are important to our nation’s culinary and agricultural history. Their virtual disappearance from the American food system is due to agribusiness’ focus on speed and profitability. While we must be economically sustainable, our farm’s focus is on quality food and quality of life for these amazing and useful creatures. They each have unique characteristics that enrich the farming and culinary experience. For more information on rare and heritage breeds, visit the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy website.
In the last few years, we have streamlined the operation to focus on Tamworth hogs and St. Croix Sheep. Our animals are raised outdoors on rolling pastures which are not treated with chemical fertilizers or herbicides. The diets of pasture forage and grains are highly nutritious and free from hormones, antibiotics, and meat byproducts. We make every effort to ensure the animals are safe, free from stress, and are able to behave naturally. There are no stuffy confinement pens or waste lagoons here.
- Pigs are free to roam, root, and play in the sunshine and fresh air. The breeds we raise were especially selected for superior meat quality and hardiness for outdoor living.
- Sheep have run of the pastures and woods, getting lots of nutritional variety and keeping the landscape tidy!
